Uh uh uh...
I was never really a fan of hip-hop that much. That was until my membersss, Billy told me that he just downloaded Jay-Z's "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" and strongly recommended to try it out. I did. And I became a fan. Not that much of the entire hip hop genre. There are quite a number of duds out there, especially the Taiwanese shite that is dumping outta the TV and airwaves.
No, while I respect Jay Chou's prolific songwriting, he can't rap for shit. His rhythm is quite boring, well except for 2 songs I recall. The production was strong and the lyrics were pretty funny. I heard Hong Kong's LMF's "Bruce Lee" in Roy's car that day. I was swept away though I understand only a pittance of Cantonese. It had fucken great production and insanely catchy hooks. A true hallmark of a great pop song which inherently what most hip-hop songs are about.
Now seriously, when was the last time you heard a 5 minute guitar solo in a hip-hop song? Yeah, I thought so too.
Yeah, before I start on Jay-Z again, I must declare this. The world's greatest rapper alive is Chuck D from Public Enemy. Nobody touches him. Just check out their song, "Black Steel". Fucken amazing.
Anyway, there was this huge debacle about producer DJ Danger Mouse mixing Jay-Z's "Black Album" with the Beatles' "White Album", calling it, well, the "Gray Album". I've downloaded the entire "Gray Album" and I can only say one thing. You'd never hear the Beatles in the same light again. The "Gray Album" was mixed from Jay-Z's accappella version of his "Black Album", spliced with samples taken only from the Beatles' "White Album".
Now, DJ Cheap Cologne did his own version which has been floating around on the Internet for a while. Called the "Double Black Album". Jay-Z spliced with Metallica's "1991 "Black Album". Unfortunately, you can only get a preview of it off this site. It will make Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit cry and throw in the towel. It will remind you why Rage Against The Machine was that good.
If anyone get the full album, tell me about it. Thanks in advance!
P.S.: Of course, there's "Purple Album" and some other weird colours but one album at a time, eh?
